Consider alternative construction practices for docks that allow sunlight to penetrate eelgrass meadows. Eelgrass beds provide foraging, breeding, or nursery areas for invertebrates, fish, and birds. This file aggregates data from several sources across multiple years; see supplemental info. Features shown here should not be considered a representation of condition for any given year.
Eelgrass beds are highly productive communities that support a diverse assemblage of animals and long recognized as important in coastal food webs. Eelgrass beds act as a refuge, feeding ground, or habitat to many animals, the loss of eelgrass can result in profound shifts in fauna, including commercial and recreational species. Eelgrass beds play a variety of roles in the aquatic ecosystem. For some animals, the beds are a source of food. For others, the dense vegetation forms a safe place for newly hatched life to hide, acting like an underwater nursery. Flounder, shellfish, and crabs all use eelgrass at some point in their lives. Eelgrass is a true plant (not a seaweed) that grows submerged or partially floating in the marine environment.
Dense eelgrass determined from image classi cation and from digitized polygons showed similar patterns of initial decline and then increase in eelgrass bed extent. In the rst year, the dense eelgrass classes from both classi cation and polygons were 70-80 ha.

Common Eelgrass gets its name from its long, eel-like leaves. Eelgrass beds are highly productive communities, and are ecologically important because they act as a nursery, habitat, and feeding ground for many fish, waterfowl, and invertebrates. As such, eelgrass beds, as well as other seagrasses, often have become the center of resource management initiatives to protect them.
